Weekend Guide to Tai O: Hong Kong's Venice
大澳週末遊
hkgspot Editorial·
Tai O sits about 90 minutes from Central by bus from Tung Chung, but it feels like a different decade - a fishing village built on tidal creeks, largely unchanged in layout for generations.
Start at the main bridge over the creek to see the stilt houses, then walk the waterfront stalls for dried seafood and the local tai o donut, a fried dough snack sold hot from oil drums.
A short boat trip (about HK$25-30 per person) takes you out toward open water, with a decent chance of spotting the Chinese white dolphin in the right season, roughly October to April.
On the way back to Tung Chung, most visitors stop at the Ngong Ping cable car and Big Buddha, making Tai O easy to combine into a full Lantau day trip.
